The True Cost: Stories of Human Trafficking
The True Cost: Stories of Human Trafficking gives voice to the forgotten ones: the people who are forced into sexual servitude; the children who are exploited as slave labor to provide cheap goods sold in our very own neighborhoods; the women and men who are lured into domestic labor that turns out to be entrapment rather than employment. There is no exaggerating the magnitude of the problem: The International Labour Organization estimates that there are currently 40.3 million victims of human trafficking globally, serving a $150 billion industry worldwide including sex trafficking and various kinds of forced labor.
Renowned Chicago theatre artist and playwright Jenny Magnus has created a breathtaking play using the true stories of trafficking survivors, obtained through interviews with anonymous volunteer participants. The show is 45 minutes long and is designed to allow time for a post show panel discussion with local experts and activists working to stop human trafficking. According to Magnus, we should consider that human beings are a renewable resource, and their exploitation is making some people very rich. The talkback aims to educate audiences about the issue, and illuminate what actions people can take in their daily lives to combat human trafficking. The booking package contains information to help you set up a post show discussion in your community.
In addition to Jenny Magnus, the creative team for The True Cost also includes director KellyAnn Corcoran, and performers Nate Smith, Katherine Bellantone, and Debbie Banos.
